MyHealth uses the below color codes to interpret blood pressure measurements.
This classification is taken from the 2018 guidelines of the European Society of Hypertension and the European Society of Cardiology. It is based on the values of seated blood pressure measured in the office or hospital by a healthcare professional.
However, pressure measured in a doctor's office is not an exact reflection of blood pressure due to different phenomena. The best known is the white coat effect: blood pressure is higher in front of the doctor than at home. Another effect that is also common but less well known is masked hypertension. In this case, the blood pressure is normal at the doctor's office, but higher at home.
For these reasons, self-measurement at home is important. Doctor's recommendations suggest using the following values as an indicator of a rise in blood pressure in self-measurement:
- Systolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 135mmHg
- Diastolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 85mmHg
A well-done self-measurement is 3 measurements done in morning and evening, after 5 minutes of rest, 3 days in a row.
